Environmentalists may complain about offshore oil platforms, but the rockfish in the Santa Barbara channel aren’t paying attention. According to a study announced by UC Santa Barbara, rockfish are finding better living through human chemistry. The platforms provide security and prime nursing habitat, such that their numbers, once dangerously low, are now resurging. The artificial reefs are apparently doing more for the fish than their natural ones.Of course man did not have this in mind when drilling for oil, but it shows that human activity is not always an environmental curse. We’re part of the ecology, too, and sometimes our animal friends learn to adapt – even profit – from our ventures.(Visited 7 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

The speakers at the recent summit were (front, from left) Bafana Mabale, Lefty Mogorosi, Refilwe Thlabanyane, Mojalefa Nale, (back, from left) Miller Matola, Leo Makgamathe and Jaco Viljoen. Opti Chicks manager Jaco Viljoen spoke about his company’s contribution to growth and sustainability in the province. Opti Chicks produces day-old broilers for the local market. The event, held on 28 November 2011, showcased local poultry operation Opti Chicks and its innovative business model.Taking place in each of the nine provinces, the summits aim to increase provincial participation in the nation-branding effort and encourage active citizenship – which, in turn, will help position the country as a top investment and tourism destination. Each event presents South Africans who, through their work and community initiatives, are already active ambassadors for the country and epitomise the unique characteristics, or pillars, of the South African brand – ubuntu, diversity, sustainability, possibility and innovation.Seizing opportunityHaving identified a gap in the market for day-old chicks over three years ago, Opti Chicks has become one of the leading suppliers in the province. It sells the birds to other poultry companies, which then rear the hatchlings for consumption. The North West is the biggest broiler-growing area in South Africa, and Opti Chicks is ideally placed to make the most of opportunities in such a niche segment of the production chain. What adds value to this company and sets it apart from competitors is the fact that it concentrates solely on producing top-quality day-old birds, whereas most other players in the industry are fully integrated. This means they focus on the entire growing cycle, from breeding chickens and processing their meat to distributing and marketing the end product.“Opti Chicks was started in 2008 by NWK, a 102-year-old agriculture-based business in the province with its head office in Lichtenburg. With an initial investment of R150-million (US$18.4-million), the original plan was to produce 350 000 day-old chicks per week,” says manager Jaco Viljoen.“But after we secured a supply agreement with one of the leading role-players in the industry, and they agreed to buy that number from us, we decided to go slightly bigger and produce 500 000 chicks per week. Other stakeholders in North West also needed day-old chicks, so we decided we could sell the difference to them.”Training and development keyWith the supply contract in place and the production capacity decided upon, Opti Chicks set about building up the business. They bought a 320ha farm between the towns of Ottosdal and Coligny in the province and began recruiting staff. Some 90% of staff were unskilled and knew little about the business when they started – one of the company’s biggest challenges, according to Viljoen. But thanks to rigorous ongoing training and development, Opti Chicks has rapidly amassed skills and boosted competency and efficiency. So far the company has created 182 jobs and plans to double that and its capacity by 2014.“In the beginning, through innovative thinking and planning, we realised that we were able to use our existing incubation equipment to further increase our capacity from 500 000 to 650 000 chicks per week, which amounts to about 34-million birds per year. Our operation now accounts for 3.3% of the total production in South Africa,” Viljoen adds.Hygiene is one of Opti Chicks’ top priorities, as the business is highly sensitive to poultry diseases.“We have a shower facility at the farm gate for all personnel entering the premises, and require them to wear protective clothing. We need to make sure there is absolutely no contamination from the outside.”Viljoen attributes the success of his operation to good management practices, thorough training, proper implementation of systems and not overcapitalising on staff and infrastructure.“Our contribution to North West includes job creation and economic stability and sustainability, meaning that no chicks have to be brought in from other provinces. All our inputs, such as maize for feed and bedding material, are also all sourced from North West, which means we help support other local businesses as well.”Growing its African footprintOpti Chicks is currently looking to buy another farm to accommodate expected capacity expansion.“We currently export fertilised eggs for broiler operations in Nigeria, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and other states on the continent, and are planning to expand our footprint to the rest of Africa in the next 10 years – we’re now looking for strategic partners for that. We want to be prepared for any growth or new developments when they come our way.”Some 32kg of poultry was consumed per capita in the country in 2010, followed by 17.65kg of beef, 4.58kg of pork and 3.16kg of mutton and goat – indicating that chicken is the biggest protein source for South Africans. In comparison, the per capita poultry consumption in the US in 2010 was 43kg, meaning there’s potential for the local industry to expand by 40% to 50% in the coming years. The challenge here is to ensure that this growth comes from South Africa, as 16% of domestically consumed poultry is now imported – and 73% of this from Brazil.“Because of the strength of the rand and the cost of maize in South Africa, imports increased by 15% between 2009 and 2010. And from January to July 2011, 181 554 tons were imported – this is estimated to increase to 311 235 tons by the end of the year.“If half of that could be produced locally, the potential new jobs in the chicken and feed industry could amount to 10 000,” Viljoen says.

“Sultan ko sirf ek hi aadmi hara sake hai, woh hai Sultan khud.”This rings strangely true, for only Salman Khan can beat his own atrocities…oops, films. Reviews be damned, Salmaniacs flock to the theatres year after year to watch their beloved Bhai’s larger-than-life machismo on screen. With an exception or two, a quintessential Salman Khan film has come to be all about Bhai singlehandedly beating the daylights out of the bad guys, and giving some seeti-worthy dialogues while he is at it. Throw in a romance with a heroine half his age and some crude jokes, and voila, you have a multi-hundred crore blockbuster! No logic? Who cares!Race 3 is the latest entrant in the ‘Bhairoxxx’ bandwagon, only it takes things to the next level. There are good films, there are bad films and then, there are films that are so godawful that they become entertaining. Race 3 falls under the third category. Why would someone knowingly subject themselves to a bad film, you ask? Because when a film is so ridiculous, it transcends into the realm of the surreal, and you are left feeling not unlike Derp in this meme. Coming back to Race 3, Salman makes a smashing entry (literally). He flies off the top of a skyscraper and breaks through glass to land in the villain’s den, where his half-siblings Saqib Saleem and Daisy Shah are fighting an army of minions. Fun fact 1: Salman takes off in a wingsuit, but lands in a three-piece suit, complete with a tie.advertisementThis wingsuit also makes a comeback in a later scene, when Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez fly all the way from Cambodia to…wait for it…somewhere in the Gulf. Fun fact 2: The world record for farthest distance flown in a wingsuit is 30.406 km, but Bhai soars past this record and covers a jaw-dropping distance of over 5000 kilometres from the Far East to the Middle East. As long as it’s still East, it should work, right? The best ‘Bhairoxxx but logic doesn’t’ moment comes in a flashback scene. Salman sports a suspiciously fake-looking ‘authentic’ beard and moustache in the flashback, which gets in the way of sexy time with Jacqueline. But no one plays a party pooper for Bhai, so he whips out a Swiss knife from his pocket, and in one stroke, gets a smoother shave than Gillette. Mind = Blown.Logic and story have been sacrificed at the altar of Salman Khan. So have the lyrics of his songs in Race 3. For those not in the know, Race 3 marks Salman’s debut as a lyricist, and he has knocked it out of the park with his first try.Sample the lyrics of Selfish: “Aapne itna, itna kiya hai/ Ki ab bas aap hi haqdaar ho/ Baby selfish hone ke liye, so/ Ik baar baby selfish hoke/ Apne liye jiyo na.”And let’s not even get started with the dialogues. If you thought “Our business is our business, none of your business” was the worst this film could throw at you, you are in for a surprise. Race 3 has gems like “Isko dil nahi Dell khol ke dikhao” or “Har kahaani ke do pehlu hote hai *pregnant pause* two pehlus”.With awful performances and one-too-many nonsensical plot twists, you would think that Race 3 is a film you should avoid at all costs. But no. Celebrate it, for good-bad films are rare to come by. Watch Race 3. Watch the film in 3D. And when you’re done, echo Aamir Khan: “I hate you [like I love you].”ALSO READ: Google says Salman Khan is worst Bollywood actor after Race 3WATCH Race 3 review: Salman film is a meme in itself

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his team and the fans to show respect towards West Ham following Ederson’s ridiculous comments last week.City won the Premier League with a few games in advance, which has led them to step off the gas and get a break from the efforts they have been putting in throughout the whole season – they only lost a handful of games in this campaign.Winning the title sparked comments from Ederson regarding his desire to score at least a single goal in a penalty before the season ends – either in the game against West Ham or any in other of their left fixtures.Report: City are stunned by Norwich George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Manchester City was stunned by Norwich City in todays Premier League clash.Much has been made in recent days of the potential impact of Aymeric…“That is not going to happen because he is a goalkeeper. The Newcastle loanee believes he’s now more mature to play in the English Premier League giant and he hopes to prove it with his footballRobert Kenedy Nunes Nascimento, better known as Kenedy, believes he’s now more mature than before to be able to play on English Premier League side, Chelsea. The winger started his professional career in Fluminense, where he played from 2013 to 2015.He was then bought by Chelsea, but he has been loaned three times: once in 2016 to Watford, and then twice in 2018 to Newcastle United. And now, he wants to prove he has grown as a professional.“I hope this year I can make a good season for Newcastle and go back to Chelsea,” he told Brazilian website UOL.Vidic: “Ronaldo is the most professional footballer I’ve seen” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Nemanja Vidic opened up on how a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s professionalism left him stunned at Manchester United.“It is not that I didn’t succeed at Chelsea.”“I arrived at 19, very young. It was good to be loaned to get more playing time. Better than staying at Chelsea and not play,” he continued.“I hope this year I can make a good season for Newcastle and go back to Chelsea to continue. I have a dream to return and to be a champion for the club.”“Just being in the Premier League is already a great achievement. A lot of people come and can’t play. For me, it’s been very good. My dream is to win a major title,” Kenedy explained.“I played at Chelsea with [Jose] Mourinho, he always helped me and showed me what I had to do in training, what he taught me I take as learning with me, and now I’m learning from another great coach, Rafa [Benitez].”

Jose Mourinho says he didn’t learn anything from Manchester United’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Valencia.Manchester United boss Mourinho told reporters he was not surprised that his Red Devil squad lost their last UCL group stage match against the Spanish club. Mourinho’s United already had their ticket to the knockout stage of the tournament, but a win would have left the club as leaders of Group H since Juventus lost 2-1 against Young Boys.“No, maybe you did. Not me. I didn’t learn anything from this game. Nothing that happened surprised me at all,” he said, according to FourFourTwo.Mourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.“I think that to qualify in this group is a success. Before the game, I told the players if we win tonight and Juventus win, then we did our job. If we don’t win and Juventus don’t win, we can blame ourselves.“Apart from a couple of clubs that are clearly much better than the others, I don’t think the draw will be so different. There are teams that finished second that the ones that finished first are not happy to play against.”

Qatar Sports League club Al Duhail have reportedly set made an offer for Juventus defender Medhi BenatiaThe Moroccan centre-back is understood to be considering a highly lucrative proposal from Al Duhail, who have allegedly made a €10m bid to Juventus.Al Duhail, who are coached by Jose Mourinho’s former assistant Rui Faria, are keen to add Benatia to their ranks as they bid to overhaul Al Sadd for the top spot in the Qatar Sports League.Currently, Faria’s side trails the league leaders by a single point after 15 games. Now Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Juventus are considering whether or not to accept the offer. The Bianconeri value Benatia at around €10m, but will only likely be able to sanction the transfer if they can find a replacement in time.Benatia has been at Turin since 2016 after arriving from Bayern Munich on an initial €3m loan deal before Juventus snapped him up on a permanent one for €17 a year later. But the Morrocan has made just six appearances in all competitions this season and recently took to social media to express his frustrations.Juventus confirm Mario Mandzukic could leave this month Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Sporting director Fabio Paratici confirmed reports that Mario Mandzukic could leave Juventus for a move to an unnamed Qatari team.“In this difficult time, many of you leave me messages of support, and I thank you for it!” Benatia wrote on Instagram.“I particularly want to pay a tribute to the Moroccans of the world who take the time to write to me!“As I can not answer everyone, I confirm that there is no place for doubt and that we must continue to move with our heads held high because a LION never dies, he sleeps.”Speaking on the 31-year-old leaving Juventus at the end of December, manager Massimiliano Allegri insisted he remains a big part of his plans.“I do not think he will go away, he is an important player,” said Allegri.“He has played six games, on some occasions he was not well, but to let him go would be madness.”However, considering that Benatia hasn’t played for Juventus since conceding a penalty against AC Milan on November 11, a winter exit could well be on the table.Arsenal have also been linked with Benatia, whose contract at Juventus expires in June 2020.
